Signal is a nonprofit newsroom based in Ohio, dedicated to providing reliable, community-driven news. As one of the largest nonprofit newsrooms in the country, with locations in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Akron, Signal keeps residents at the center of its mission, ensuring news is accessible and relevant to everyone. The goal for this logo was to create a bold, iconic mark that conveys trust and credibility.
Since Signal started in Cleveland, it was essential to reflect the city in the logo. The design features a crossroads pattern inspired by the freedom quilt, a symbol of Cleveland’s historical role as a hub of freedom during the Underground Railroad. This element honors the city’s rich history while also symbolizing Cleveland as a center for information, knowledge, and representation.
The quilt-inspired design further emphasizes diversity and inclusion, creating a visual patchwork in which every resident can see themselves represented.
